The expectations and work satisfaction of nursing personnel in a public general hospital

OBJECTIVE Investigation of the expectations and work satisfaction of the nursing personnel in a public general hospital in Crete.

METHOD The nursing personnel of all levels of the General Hospital of Aghios Nikolaos, Crete completed anonymously a weighted questionnaire comprised of two sections of closed-ended questions. Parametric and nonparametric tests were conducted for the statistical processing of data using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SSPS), version 21.0. The level of statistical significance was a=5%.

RESULTS The work satisfaction of the participants was related to factors such as their relationship with the patients and the particularities of their working activities. Areas of dissatisfaction included low income, unfavourable working conditions and lack of prospects for career development.

CONCLUSIONS The questionnaire used in this study appeared efficient in portraying the level of satisfaction of the expectations of the nursing personnel from their work in the public hospital. It is necessary to continue the process of assessing work satisfaction. Hospital administrators should make use of the results of this and other similar studies to design ways of motivating the nursing personnel and enhancing the services provided by hospitals.
