Attempted suicide in psychiatric outpatients with concurrent physical
illness. 17th European Conference on Psychosomatic Research (1988,
Marburg, Federal Republic of Germany).
Source :
Psychotherapy & Psychosomatics. Vol 50(4) 201-206, 1988.
Abstract :
Compared 50 outpatients with concurrent psychiatric and physical illness
(Group A) who were referred following a suicidal attempt to an outpatient
psychiatric department between 1979 and 1981 with a random sample of 85
psychiatric outpatients without concurrent physical illness who had
attempted suicide at the same time period. Members of Group A were more
often older, married, pensioners or housewifes, living with their own
family, suffering from organic psychotic condition or major affective
disorder (depressive type), and more frequently used violent methods for
attempting suicide. In Group A, the most common physical illnesses were
neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and other chronic
and painful conditions likely to produce depression.

Prospects of rehabilitation for elderly schizophrenics.
Source :
British Journal of Psychiatry. Vol 155 451-454, Oct 1989.
Abstract :
Compared the psychopathology and disabilities of 40 institutionalized
elderly schizophrenics (aged 65+ yrs) with 40 matched nonschizophrenic
elderly, and with younger schizophrenics (mean age 44 yrs) reported in a
parallel study by G. C. Lyketsos et al (1988). Elderly schizophrenics
showed significantly more psychopathology and disability than the
nonschizophrenic elderly and less than younger schizophrenics. Disability
among elderly schizophrenics may be due to organic deterioration.

Counselling immigrant women: A feminist critique of traditional
therapeutic approaches and reevaluation of the role of therapist. Special
Issue: Counselling women and ethnic minorities.
Source :
Counselling Psychology Quarterly. Vol 2(2) 185-204, 1989.
Abstract :
Discusses the counseling needs of ethnic women (focusing on Southern
European immigrants) and relates women's psychological difficulties to the
social, political, and economic conditions under which they live.
Traditional counseling and psychotherapy, isolated from everyday life
experience, decontextualize these clients and thus do not meet their
needs. Feminist therapy, in its recognition of how oppressive social
relations contribute to women's psychological problems, is recommended as
an alternative. The therapist becomes a facilitator of the client's own
goals and must be genuinely interested in the clients perspective and
listen to the meanings that the clients attach to their own experience.

Reliability and clinical effectiveness of the standardized Greek version
of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery.

International Journal of Clinical Neuropsychology. Vol 11(3) 129-133,
1989.
Abstract :
Tested the reliability and clinical effectiveness of S. H. Donias's (1985
(unpublished dissertation)) Greek standardized version of the
Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB (LNNB-G)). 50 patients
with a supratentorial brain disorder and 50 normal controls were given the
LNNB-G in Greece. Highly significant differences were found between the 2
groups on all scales, corroborating results of US standardization studies
(e.g., C. J. Golden et al, 1982). Results demonstrated the LNNB-G to be a
highly reliable and effective instrument, which has implications for the
LNNB as a transcultural measure for neuropsychological assessment.

Abstract :
Discusses sociodemographic and economic changes in Greek society and their
impact upon mental health epidemiology and treatment. Urbanization,
industrialization, and emigration have resulted in problems related to the
deployment of psychiatric resources, availability of psychiatric services,
and appropriateness of psychiatric interventions. Greek efforts to address
these issues are reviewed. (English abstract) (0 ref)

Abstract :
Studied the psychodynamics of matricides committed by schizophrenic (SCZ)
Ss, who cannot be fitted into an exclusively Freudian theoretical
framework because of their inability to access the symbolic dimension.
Eight male SCZ Ss, aged 24-38 yrs at the time of the murder, with a
history of repeated psychiatric commitments in Greece, were administered a
family drawing test. Results show Ss had deep ambivalence toward their
victims, Lacanian foreclosure of the name of the father, and the act of
matricide to be a doomed attempt to solve a conflictual dyadic
relationship and achieve an eternally undefined indentity. (English

Abstract :
Conducted a retrospective study of 10 sexually abused children and
adolescents treated at a large pediatric hospital and 12 sexually abused
children and adolescents seen by the Department of Social Services (DSS)
over a 5-yr period to determine the differences in management and
follow-up of the 2 agencies. Findings reveal that there was little or no
follow-up for either group. Hospital Ss received better diagnostic
work-ups, and initial intervention and treatment and follow-up at the
hospital tended to be more systematic and specialized than at DSS. All of
the DSS Ss were removed from the home, leading to greater protection from
continued abuse.

protection are reviewed, focusing on P. H. Aries's (1960) thesis, the
psychoanalytical approach, and L. Pollack's (1983) view. Examples of
concepts of society toward children are presented, including those of
ancient Greece and Rome, the Byzantine Empire, and Western Europe.
Emergence of ethical child protection concerns over the last 40 yrs are

Suicidal attempts by ingestion of various substances in 2050 children and
adolescents in Greece. 37th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Psychiatric
Association (1987, London, Canada).
Source :
Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. Vol 34(3) 205-210, Apr 1989.
Abstract :
Investigated suicidal attempts by ingestion of drugs or other chemicals in
2,050 children and adolescents (aged 6-17 yrs) seen at a poison control
center in Athens, Greece, from 1977-1982. Demographic, clinical,
psychosocial, and cultural data are discussed. Girls outnumbered boys in
the sample by 5.57 to 1. The rate of suicide attempts rose 269% over the
6-yr period, and more attempts were made in December and June. It is
argued that more attention should be paid to the increased incidence of
suicidal attempts in younger persons; thus the urgent need for early
recognition and prevention of this event is necessary. (French abstract)

Abstract :
Of 150 medical and surgical inpatients (85 men and 65 women aged 17-72
yrs) in Greece, 43 were classified as depressed (with an excess of women,
white collar workers, and Ss with more stressful life events in the last
year), using a Greek version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-GV). A
comparison of the BDI-GV scores of the depressed medical Ss with those of
43 depressed psychiatric inpatients showed that depressed medical Ss
scored higher in social withdrawal, work inhibition, and irritability, but
lower in loss of libido, sleep disturbance, and lack of satisfaction.

Abstract :
62 male and 54 female Greek cancer patients (aged 15-76 yrs) were
interviewed to determine whether they wanted to be informed and whether
they already knew about their true diagnosis and prognosis. Data were
collected using a semistructured interview, and a number of psychological
parameters were also assessed. Although only 15.5% of the Ss named their
real diagnosis, interviews indicated that 53% of the Ss were strongly
suspicious of their real diagnosis. Also, 55% of the Ss suspected their
real prognosis. When asked directly if they wanted to know whether they
had cancer, 49% of the Ss said that they would. Also, 49% of the Ss
disagreed with the withholding of the truth from patients.

Psychosocial stress, physical symptoms, and anxiety in Greek students.
Source :

Abstract :
Psychosocial stress as measured by a Greek adaptation of a schedule of
recent experiences was studied in relation to physical symptoms, manifest
anxiety, and social desirability in 138 Greek male and female university
students. Psychosocial stress was found to be related to physical symptoms
and manifest anxiety only in females. The types of stressor events
experienced by these Ss (e.g., living away from their families) were
different from those of a sample of older Greek teachers (J. Georgas and
E. Giakoumaki; see PA, Vol 72:18538).

Understanding complement clauses by educable mentally retarded and
nonretarded children and young adults.
Source :
International Journal of Psychology. Vol 23(6) 663-683, 1988.
Abstract :
Explored ways in which educable mentally retarded (EMR) children and
nonretarded (NR) children understand complement clauses that follow main
clause verbs. In Exp 1, 16 younger NR Ss (aged 58-65 mo), 16 older NR Ss
(aged 64-106 mo), 16 younger EMR Ss (aged 90-180 mo), and 16 older EMR Ss
(aged 134-197 mo) were tested with 16 linguistic constructions selected in
Greek: 4 for ask (ask information), 4 for promise, 4 for request (ask),
and 4 for tell (give information). In Exp 2, 32 5th- and 6th-grade Ss and
16 high school Ss were tested with the same linguistic constructions. The
study concludes that the learning of semantic roles and pragmatic
presuppositions cannot be considered as a unitary semantic function nor be
reduced to syntax alone. (French abstract)

Abstract :
Evaluated possible differences between iv and ip administered cocaine on
place preference conditioning (PPC) in rats. The following variables were
examined: administered dose, use of biased and unbiased compartment
procedure, amount of training during conditioning, temporal contiguity of
the conditioned (environment) and unconditioned (drug) stimulus,
state-dependent learning, and motivational properties of novelty. Data
provide evidence that iv cocaine in suitable doses produces place
preference in the rat as a result of associative conditioning.

Effects of antiandrogen-estrogen treatment on sexual and endocrine
parameters in hirsute women.
Source :
Archives of Sexual Behavior. Vol 17(5) 421-429, Oct 1988.
Abstract :
Evaluated sexual activity in 51 women (aged 16-35 yrs) with hirsutism
associated with increased levels of circulating androgens before and while
on combined treatment with the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate (CYA) and
ethinyl estradiol (EE-sub-2). Ss were compared to 52 non-hirsute women
(unmatched controls) aged 19-44 yrs. The percentage of unbound
testosterone (T) was higher, the coital frequency lower, and the
masturbation frequency higher in hirsute Ss. Frequency of coitus plus
masturbation was similar in the 2 groups. Treatment with a combination of
CYA and EE-sub-2 resulted in a decline of unbound T, increased coital
frequency, and decreased masturbation frequency. It is concluded that
raised levels of circulating androgens, as judged by free T concentration,
are not of crucial importance in the expression of sexual behavior in
hirsute women.

Giant somatosensory evoked potentials in children without myoclonic

Abstract :
Analyzed components of giant somatosensory evoked potentials (GSSEP)
occurring in 16 children (aged 5-14 yrs) with various neurological
problems, but free of myoclonic epileptic seizures. Nine Ss had epileptic
seizures. The characteristics of GSSEPs in patients without myoclonic
seizures are described. It is concluded that in Ss without myoclonic
seizures, GSSEPs occur and bear some similarity to those found in Ss with
myoclonic seizures. These GSSEPs may represent a form of hyperexcitability
in the central nervous system (CNS).

Symposium XI: Transcultural psychiatry (1987, Stockholm, Sweden).
Source :
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. Vol 78(344, Suppl) 151-157, 1988.
Abstract :
Explored perceptions of parental rearing practices by 91 imprisoned,
drug-dependent (DD) adult males, 57 imprisoned nonaddicts in the same
prison, and 130 Ss from the general population in Greece. Parental rearing
behavior was assessed with the EMBU, an instrument by C. Perris et al (see
PA, Vol 65:11686). Few differences were evident between DD Ss and
imprisoned controls (ICs); however, DD Ss perceived their fathers as less
warm and mothers as more permissive than did ICs. Greater differences in
perception were found between DD Ss and Ss from the general population.
Findings indicate that the role of the mother is crucial in drug
dependency and is mainly characterized by strong emotional bonds and
overprotective behavior toward the son.

Abstract :
40 18-40 yr old schizophrenic patients attended for 1 yr a rehabilitation
program consisting of vocational training and social therapy in the
context of medication. Clinical and family environment assessments were
carried out at intake and discharge. Results indicate a significant
improvement in terms of patients' deficit symptomatology and social
functioning but only a marginal modification of family environment by the
end of the program. Particular dimensions of family environment concerning
acceptance of the patient by other family members, intrafamilial
relationships, and family structure, were not affected by the therapeutic
intervention.

Abstract :
Demonstrates the effectiveness of basic unifying concepts, stemming from
general systems theory, in understanding functioning and malfunctioning in
individuals, families and other social groups and in improving the
performance of mental health practitioners who intervene to instigate
positive change. It is argued that the concepts or purpose and goal are
instrumental in explaining how malfunctioning is created, maintained,
increased, and controlled and clarifying the purpose of therapy, which in
turn provides guidelines for setting relevant and realistic therapeutic
goals. This frame equips the clinician with a blueprint that helps him or
her remain on track during the process of therapeutic change.

Abstract :
Sleep polygraphic recordings were performed during 3 consecutive nights in
12 inpatients (aged 20-55 yrs) with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 12
patients (aged 22-54 yrs) with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 12
normal controls (aged 23-56 yrs). GAD Ss differed significantly from those
with MDD. A lower number of awakenings and stage shifts in Night 1 and the
mean of the 3 nights and a shorter REM duration in Night 1 but longer REM
latency in the mean of the 3 nights were observed in GAD Ss compared with
MDD Ss. GAD Ss also showed a significantly longer sleep onset latency and
shorter duration of total sleep time and Stage 2 than controls. It is
suggested that EEG sleep recordings, as well as other laboratory tests,
may help the clinician to differentiate anxiety from depressive disorders.

The personal myth as a defence against internal primitive aggression.
Source :
International Journal of Psycho-Analysis. Vol 69(4) 475-482, 1988.
Abstract :
Describes the analysis of a 28-yr-old depressed woman to illustrate the
hypothesis that the personal myth (PM) is formed gradually, following a
developmental process from early body sensations to screen sensations, to
visual screen memories, to verbal thoughts, and, finally, to the formation
of the PM. This sequence corresponds to the successive development of
mental processing in human thought. It is proposed that the latent content
of the PM pertains to traumatic experiences and conflictual wishes related
to either or both the oedipal and the pre-oedipal phase of development.
When pre-oedipal elements predominate, the individual's personality is
characterized by more primitive self-object representations, intense
separation anxiety, and a greater degree of unneutralized aggression.

Cultural patterns and causal processes in adolescent drug use: The case of
Greeks versus Americans.
Source :
International Journal of the Addictions. Vol 23(6) 545-572, 1988.
Abstract :
Compared patterns of adolescent drug use in 174 Greek and 2,610 US high
school students. The rates of self-reported lifetime alcohol and cigarette
use were similar. For other drugs (marihuana, amphetamines, depressants,
cocaine, LSD, phencyclidine (PCP), and heroin), there was much more drug
use in the US. A causal model employing variables from social control and
social learning theories is applied to drug use in both samples. It is
concluded that American theories of adolescent deviance assume certain
cultural conditions, and therefore may need revision before they can be
applied to the behavior of young people in other cultures.

Journal of Affective Disorders. Vol 15(2) 113-118, Sep-Oct 1988.
Abstract :
After 1 accommodation night, sleep EEG recordings were performed during 2
consecutive nights in 10 drug-free adult inpatients presenting generalized
anxiety disorder (GAD) with significant depression, compared with 10 age-
and sex-matched patients with GAD and a group of 10 primary major
depressive disorder (MDD) patients. GAD Ss with depression did not differ
from GAD Ss in any sleep variable. Ss with MDD showed more stage shifts
and a greater number of awakenings than Ss with GAD. REM latency was
significantly shorter in MDD Ss than in the other groups, and may help to
differentiate anxious from depressed patients.

Recurrence risk for the relatives of delusional depressed patients.
Source :
Acta Psychiatrica Belgica. Vol 86(4) 485-490, Jul-Aug 1986.
Abstract :
Calculated the recurrence risks for major depression among adult
1st-degree relatives of patients with delusional depression, using a
computer program. The resulting risk tables are based on data from 454
1st-degree relatives of 77 probands with delusional depression, 503
1st-degree relatives of 76 nondelusional probands, and 980 1st-degree
relatives of 153 general population controls. Findings show that
delusional depression had a strong genetic component in its etiology.
Relatives of the delusional probands were 7-8 times more likely to have
major depression than relatives of the normal controls. Results of a
segregation analysis suggest that delusional depression has a
multifactorial mode of inheritance. (French & Dutch abstracts)

Effects of ritanserin on the rewarding properties of d-amphetamine,
morphine and diazepam revealed by conditioned place preference in rats.
Source :
Pharmacology, Biochemistry & Behavior. Vol 30(4) 853-858, Aug 1988.
Abstract :
Investigated the possibility that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT-sub-2)
receptors mediate the reinforcing properties of d-amphetamine, morphine,
and diazepam in rats, using ritanserin, a 5-HT-sub-2 antagonist, and the
conditioned place preference paradigm. Ritanserin 1 or 2.5 mg/kg did not
cause place conditioning. Place preference induced by 1.5 mg/kg
d-amphetamine and 2 mg/kg morphine was inhibited and attenuated
respectively by pretreatment with 2.5 mg/kg ritanserin. Diazepam- (1
mg/kg) induced place preference was completely blocked by both doses of
ritanserin. Ritanserin pretreatment failed to influence
amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion, morphine-induced analgesia, and
diazepam-induced increased open arm exploration of rats on the elevated
plus maze.

Abstract :
Investigated the role of the serotonergic system in electroconvulsive
shock therapy (ECT)-induced serum prolactin (PRL) secretion in 8 adult
female patients with major depression. Ss were administered either ECT
alone or ECT plus methysergide (MET), which blocks serotonin receptors.
Results indicate that pretreatment with MET significantly reduced the PRL
response to ECT. The mechanisms by which MET diminished ECT-induced PRL
secretion and the role of the serotonergic system in cortisol secretion,
which was not altered by MET during ECT in the present study, are
discussed.

thalassemia, a serious hereditary blood disease, on the life of the
affected teenager and the parents. Six adolescents (aged 14-19 yrs) and
their family members were interviewed separately for a maximum of 1 hr

65 temporal lobe epileptics (TLE) and 36 non-TLE epileptics were assessed
in Greece in a psychiatric interview based on Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) criteria. Six TLE Ss and 20 non-TLE
Ss completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and
43 TLE Ss and 27 non-TLE Ss completed the Eysenck Personality
Questionnaire. Results indicate that there was no significant quantitative
difference in psychiatric morbidity between TLE and non-TLE Ss. However,
the TLE Ss appeared to be more psychopathologically inclined because more
severe psychiatric diagnoses were exclusively given to this group (i.e.,
organic brain syndrome).

investigate possible influences of treatment with estradiol. There was a
tendency for increased open-arm exploration by pre-estrous and diestrous

Ss. Ss treated 24 hrs after subchronic treatment with estradiol also
exhibited increased open-arm exploration. The anti-anxiety effect of

Abstract :
Investigated the effects of a type of community-based psychiatric
aftercare on the course of negative symptoms and other psychosocial
parameters on a cohort of 106 chronic schizophrenic patients. 34 Ss (Group
A) received care from a community mental health center; 72 Ss (Group B)

The number of Group A Ss who were readmitted to mental hospitals between
the 2nd and 3rd assessments, in relation to their negative symptom levels,
was lower than that of Group B Ss. The need for decentralized community
support services for the deinstitutionalized severely mentally ill is
stressed.

Abstract :
Explored the relations between alexithymia and level of arousal in 105
patients with generalized anxiety, phobias, or obsessional disorders. Ss
were identified as either low (LA) or high (HA) in alexithymia. These
groups underwent a psychophysiological assessment concerning electrodermal
activity measures recorded during resting and stimulation periods. HA Ss
demonstrated significantly higher levels of electrodermal arousal and
slower recovery time in novel situations than LA Ss. Findings support the
view of J. B. Martin and R. O. Pihl (see PA, Vol 73:20202) that an
exacerbated degree of arousal is an important factor in the development of
alexithymia, even in a nonpsychosomatic population.

Abstract :
Conducted a study to evaluate the effects of sibship size, birth order,
and parents' age at birth on the risk of offspring developing
schizophrenia, using data from 221 Greek schizophrenic patients and
matched control patients. No relationship was found between the occurrence
of schizophrenia in Ss and father's or mother's age at Ss' birth, sibship
size, or birth order when demographic and socioeconomic status (SES)
variables were accounted for. Although Ss were of similar SES to the
controls, they came from families with higher original SES, a fact which
appears to reflect the decline of both schizophrenic and preschizophrenic
Ss in society.

Abstract :
Evaluated qualitative aspects of depression in a group of 40 elderly
schizophrenics (mean age 70.8 yrs). Ss' frequency of depressive syndromes
and symptoms was compared with those of a matched group of 40 elderly Ss
in the community and of 61 other institutionalized schizophrenics based on
responses to the Present State Examination and a mental test score. Data
indicate that neurotic depression and anxiety states were not seen in the
group of elderly schizophrenics. Flattening of affect was seen in both
groups of schizophrenics but not in the elderly Ss in the community.
Depressive syndromes and mental disabilities in elderly schizophrenics are
discussed with regard to their rehabilitation after

Abstract :
788 adult depressive patients were studied in 3 different psychiatric
services of a Greek rural district: an inpatient, an outpatient, and a
mobile unit service. Headache was found to be the most frequent symptom in
both outpatient and mobile unit Ss. Musculoskeletal complaints and
dizziness and gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and genitourinary symptoms
were also frequent. The incidence of all other somatic complaints
increased with age and was higher in inpatients. Headache appeared to be
an early diagnostic phenomenon for an underlying depression in
outpatients. The mental health mobile unit saw the greatest percentage of
neurotic depressives, who also presented the highest incidence of
headache. The efficacy of that service for tracing such cases and the need
for cooperation with the primary health care for better preventive
measures are stressed.

Abstract :
Recorded rotational activity in 24 male rats after dorsal or ventral

Abstract :
Examined the presence of pathological moods and symptoms among 9 groups of
patients ( N = 269) with conditions of presumably psychogenic origin,
including peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis
(UC), urticaria, psoriasis, and alopecia. Investigations focused on
dysthymic states, measured by a scale of anxiety and depression (SAD) and
the Present State Examination (PSE). On the SAD, all the above groups
scored significantly higher than 165 somatically ill controls in anxiety,
and all except ulcer patients scored significantly higher in depression.
The PSE designated more than half of these patients as cases, except in
the psoriasis group. Most patients were assigned to the PSE syndromes of
anxiety states or neurotic depression, with the former being more common
in UC and urticaria, and the latter more common in IBS, alopecia, and
rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract :
Discusses the childrearing practices and the situation of family therapy
in Greece. It is argued that many children in Greece live in an
overprotective, overcontrolling, and overdemanding environment (i.e., in a
stressful and noxious one), which could underlie the children's emotional
problems. The efficacy of family therapy was compared with that of
individual therapy in a child guidance clinic. Family therapy was offered
to 139 families with children exhibiting neurotic, psychosomatic, and mild
behavioral disorders. 73% of the cases in family therapy were considered
improved, whereas 32% of the cases in individual therapy were considered
improved.

(EMR (aged 7 yrs 9 mo to 13 yrs 6 mo)) children matched on verbal mental
ability (MA). Before and after constructions were associated with 3
variables at a time: semantic logic of sequence, syntax of conjunction,
and order of mention. Data show that normal Ss performed significantly
better than EMR Ss and suggest that the linguistic performance of EMR
children cannot be best predicted on the basis of MA. Before was better
understood than after, but interactions between syntax, semantics, and
order of mention suggest that differences in performances were
quantitative rather than qualitative.

The challenge of current developments in psychiatry.
Source :

Abstract :
Suggests that changes in the conceptual framework and patterns of practice
of psychiatry observed in the 1950s signaled the end of a paradigmatic and
the emergence of a pragmatic approach to mental problems. Changes included
the emergence of new theoretical formulations that depart from traditional
interpretations of normal and abnormal psychological functioning. Efforts
by the World Psychiatric Association to unify the profession, and

Normal testosterone plasma levels in non-abstinent alcoholics.
Source :
Drug & Alcohol Dependence. Vol 20(1) 81-85, Sep 1987.
Abstract :
Compared testosterone (TS), prolactin (PRL), and luteinizing hormone (LH)
levels in the plasma of 32 male chronic alcoholics during their usual
alcohol consumption and in 32 age-matched controls. Alcoholics' TS levels
were not different from normals; both PRL and LH were significantly
elevated. 11 Ss with severe liver injury showed elevated PRL but normal LH
and TS; Ss with normal hepatic function showed normal PRL levels and
elevated LH and TS levels.

Delusional depression: Further evidence for genetic contribution.
Source :
Psychiatry Research. Vol 21(3) 277-283, Jul 1987.
Abstract :
To quantify the contribution of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of
delusional depression, the incidence of major depression in 1,865
1st-degree relatives (i.e., parents and siblings) of 77 delusional (mean
age 53.1 yrs) and 76 nondelusional (mean age 50.9 yrs) depressive patients
and 153 age- and sex-matched controls was calculated in a case-control
study. Assessments were based on interviews, medical records, and other
available data. It was found that the morbid risk for psychiatric
disorders, including major depression and bipolar I disorder, did not
distinguish the 2 proband groups. However, the 1st-degree relatives of
both groups were at a 5-7 times higher risk of major depression than the
relatives of controls. Segregation analysis showed that a model of
multifactorial inheritance fit the results best.

Estrogen treatment to ovariectomized rats modifies morphine-induced
behavior.
Source :
Pharmacology, Biochemistry & Behavior. Vol 27(4) 611-617, Aug 1987.
Abstract :
165 ovariectomized rats were treated for 3 days with either subcutaneous
17 beta-estradiol (10 or 100 mug/kg per day) or the oil vehicle. They were
then tested for morphine-induced (MI) hyperactivity, analgesia, and
catalepsy 24 or 72 hrs after the last steroid or oil injection. Estradiol
treatment did not affect locomotion or sensitivity to nociceptive stimuli
and did not induce a cataleptic state. Estradiol (100 mug/kg) attenuated
MI hyperlocomotion regardless of the time that had elapsed after estradiol
treatment cessation, attenuated MI catalepsy at 24 hrs after estradiol
treatment, and failed to alter MI analgesia. Estradiol (10 mug/kg)
significantly increased MI analgesia and slightly increased catalepsy.
Results show that the sensitivity of brain opiate systems controlling some
of the behavioral effects of morphine is modified following estradiol
treatment in ovariectomized rats.

Electrodermal responding and chlorpromazine treatment in schizophrenia.
Source :
British Journal of Psychiatry. Vol 150 850-853, Jun 1987.
Abstract :
Skin conductance level (SCL) and skin conductance responses to a series of
tones were measured in 25 drug-free schizophrenic adult patients before
and after standard chlorpromazine treatment. Psychopathology was measured
with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. After treatment, Ss showed an
improved psychopathology and decreased SCL. There was a transition of Ss
to lower response categories: The number of responders decreased twice and
the number of nonresponders increased 3 times. Responders exhibited
significantly higher SCL than nonresponders and fast habituators were
between the 2 groups.

Classification of sleep disorders. Special Issue: Sleep disorders.
Source :
Psychiatric Annals. Vol 17(7) 454-458, Jul 1987.
Abstract :
Critiques sleep disorder classifications in the International
Classification of Diseases--Ninth Edition (ICD-9 (1978)) and the
Association of Sleep Disorders (1979) system, and presents an overview of
the classifications in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders-III--Revised (DSM-III--R) and the ICD-10. It is noted that the
DSM-III--R and the ICD-10, unlike earlier systems, include clinically
based diagnostic classifications, are compatible with a multiaxial format,
and reinforce the doctor-patient relationship.

Longitudinal studies of biologic markers for depression in male
anorectics.
Source :
Psychoneuroendocrinology. Vol 12(3) 237-239, 1987.
Abstract :
Tested 2 male anorexics (aged 17 and 18 yrs) with the dexamethasone
suppression test (DST), the thyrotropin releasing hormone test, and sleep
recordings for determining REM latency (REML) over 1 yr. Both Ss showed
abnormalities of all 3 biological markers for depression, although they
did not meet the criteria for major depression. Abnormal DST and short
REML subsided with body weight restoration.

Low dominance and high intropunitiveness in ulcerative colitis and
irritable bowel syndrome.
Source :
Psychotherapy & Psychosomatics. Vol 46(4) 171-176, 1986.
Abstract :
37 adult patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 38 adult irritable
bowel syndrome (IBS) patients were compared for hostile personality
characteristics and dysthymic states with 43 nonpsychosomatic medical
patients. Results indicate that the 2 psychosomatic groups were less
dominant, more intropunitive, more anxious, and more depressed than the
controls. IBS patients were more dominant and less intropunitive than UC
patients. It is noted that low dominance has been associated by G. A.
Foulds (1976) with psychosomatic illnesses, and high intropunitiveness
with neurotic formation. Both UC and IBS patients have been found to be
severely neurotic, reflecting the concurrence of psychosomatic and
neurotic defenses in these diseases. More IBS patients had premorbid
psychiatric symptoms than controls and UC patients.

Apomorphine-induced behaviour during the oestrous cycle of the rat.
Source :
Neuropharmacology. Vol 26(8) 1037-1045, Aug 1987.
Abstract :
Assessed effects of apomorphine (APO) on open field and stereotyped
behavior, body temperature, and concentrations of serum estradiol in
cycling and ovariectomized female rats. Endocrine status at proestrus
influenced APO-induced hyperlocomotion and hypothermia. Ovariectomy
increased the stimulatory effect of APO on locomotion. During phases with
low levels of estrogen, APO significantly increased serum estradiol. It is
concluded that dopaminergic mechanisms differentially affected behavior
during the cycle and following ovariectomy.

Countertransference responses in short-term dynamic psychotherapy. 1st
European Symposium on Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (1986, Copenhagen,
Denmark).
Source :
Psychotherapy & Psychosomatics. Vol 46(3) 105-109, 1986.
Abstract :
Presents 3 clinical examples in which specific instances of
countertransference are illustrated: (a) those connected with the
patient's transference pattern; (b) those linked with the therapist's
character structure; and (c) those manifested in specific stages of
short-term dynamic psychotherapy, especially during the termination phase.
Therapists were residents in psychiatry and were supervised by
psychiatrists with formal psychoanalytic training and experience. It is
maintained that the distinction of countertransference in light of its
provoking factors can facilitate work in supervision and may, in part,
alleviate guilt and anxiety feelings of the inexperienced therapist.
