DRUG-INDUCED GINGIVAL HYPERPLASIA
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY - FINDINGS - MECHANISM
J. FANDRIDIS, P. TOMPAS, J. LAMPADAKIS
SUMMARY The main drugs that cause gingival hyperplasia as a side effect are phenytoin, cyclosporin-A and the calcium channel blockers. These drugs, despite the fact that they belong to different categories, share a common way of action. In this paper, in addition to the reference of the clinical, pathophysiological and histological findings, a close focusing is made to the way of action of these drugs at the biochemical and cellular level, in order to elucidate the causing mechanism of the gingival hyperplasia.
KEY WORDS: Gingival hyperplasia, Phenytoin, Cyclosporin-A, Calcium channel blockers.
