DENTIGEROUS CYSTS
A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY
I. MELAKOPOULOS, E. PARARA, A. KANELLOPOULOU, E. STYLOGIANNI
SUMMARY Dentigerous cysts form around the crown of an unerupted tooth and are attached to its neck. They are rather common lesions, especially in the mandible. They usually appear during the first decade of life, but are diagnosed mainly during the third or fourth decade. The ratio of affected males to females is 1.6:1. The aim of the present study was to review the clinical and radiological characteristics as well as the surgical treatment followed in 29 selected cases of dentigerous cysts in an equal number of patients aged between 8 and 72 years, who were treated in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Dental School of the University of Athens and verified histologically in the Oral Pathology Department of the same School, in the time between 1985 and 1998. Of those patients, 11 were free of symptoms and the cysts were revealed as a radiological finding, whereas the rest were complaining of pain and/or swelling of various severity. Surgical methods used for treatment of the cysts were: marsupialisation, enucleation, a combination of the two methods above and surgical removal followed by opening of the maxillary sinus with the Caldwell-Luc approach. The therapeutic results were satisfactory according to the postoperative review.
KEY WORDS: Dentigerous cyst.
