SUMMARY A statistical analysis of 1119 biopsied lesions from the anatomic area of the lips submitted for diagnosis during a 28 year period in the Department of Oral Pathology of the University of Athens is presented. Clinical data regarding location, age and sex were reviewed. The results showed that: benign tumors or tumor-like lesions (n= 454) were significantly more common (p<0.01) than premalignant (n=69) and malignant lesions (n=66) which accounted for only 12.2% of the cases. The mucocele (n=437) followed by the reactive lesions (n=319) were accounted for 68% of the cases. The most common reactive lesion was traumatic fibroma (n=250) occurring predominantly on the lower lip and in females. Premalignant lesions and carcinomas showed a significantly higher occurrence on the lower than the upper lip and in males over 40 years of age. Mucocele was found to be the most common lesion among patients in a younger age group (up to 30 years of age).
