A CLINICOPATHOLOGIC STUDY BASED ON BIOPSY MATERIAL
P. MARAGOU, A. SKLAVOUNOU-ANDRIKOPOULOU
SUMMARY A series of 532 cases of mucocutaneous diseases, with oral involvement, from the files of Oral Pathology Department of Dental School of Athens for the years 1974-1997 were included in this retrospective study. All specimens were re-evaluated according to the histologic criteria for each disease. The results of this study showed that the most common mucocutaneous diseases with oral involvement were lichen planus (54.1%), mucous membrane pemphigoid (19.5%) and pemphigus vulgaris (19.2%). Most of the patients (65%) were women with mean age 50.7 years. The highest mean age (60.1 years) was detected in mucous membrane pemphigoid and the lowest in lupus erythematosus (36.1 years). The longest duration of oral lesions until the time of final diagnosis was noticed in lichen planus (46.8 months) and the shortest in erythema multiforme (1.5 weeks). The buccal mucosa was the site of oral biopsy in the majority of lichen planus and lupus erythematosus cases (50% and 43.8% of cases respectively) whereas in mucous membrane pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris biopsies were mainly taken from the gingivae (43.3% and 32.4% of cases respectively). Desquamative gingivitis was the only oral manifestation of the above mentioned diseases in 16.9% of patients. Mucous membrane pemphigoid was the most frequent diagnosis (43.3%) followed by lichen planus (31.1%) and pemphigus vulgaris (25.6%). In the majority of cases, the clinical diagnosis was in accordance with the histopathologic diagnosis in all disease entities except for lupus erythematosus.
