Clinical study
THE EFFECT OF SMOKING IN PERIODONTAL PATIENTS
THAT HAVE RECEIVED PERIODONTAL TREATMENT
M. KOMBOLI-KONTOVAZENITI, A. TSAMI-PANDI
SUMMARY The initial purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of smoking on the plaque index and gingival index. The second purpose of the study was to explore the need for additional periodontal treatment after 3 years of systematic supportive periodontal therapy (recall visits). The patient population consisted of 62 periodontal patients classified according to their nicotine use. The supportive periodontal treatment programme -with recall appointments- started after the conservative periodontal treatment and the first reevaluation at 4 to 6 weeks. The first recall visit was at 3 months. The gingival index, the plaque index and the surfaces with bleeding on probing were recorded in every recall appointment. Whenever the percentage of surfaces with bleeding on probing exceeded the 16%, additional periodontal treatment was offered and the time interval between that and the next recall visit was reduced by one month, compared to that before. In the opposite case the time period between the recall visits was increased by one month, the time interval between that and the previous visit was used as a point of reference. The results of the present study revealed that the mean number of recall appointments, the percentage of surfaces with bleeding on probing and the need for additional periodontal treatment for the 3 years of the study were greater for smokers than non-smokers. The differences in results -for all the parameters studied- were not significant between hight and heavy smokers.
KEY WORDS: Smoking, Supportive periodontal therapy, Gingival index, Plaque index, Bleeding on probing.
