SALIVARY PROTEINS AGAINST HIV-1 INFECTION

S. HIRAKIS, A. MAVRUDEA

SUMMARY Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pandemia has reached the point of 23 million infected people globally. In U.S.A. there are 600.000 cases of AIDS reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. The risk of HIV transmission for the dental professional is of high concern, particularly in view of the growing number of infected people. Mucosal transmission through anal and vaginal intercourse, accounts for the vast majority of infections. Unlike these sites the oral cavity is not considered a well recognized route of transmission, with the exceptions of postnatal infection via breast-feeding and possibly oral-genital contact. In this review we examine the characteristics that render the oral cavity unique in its susceptibility to HIV infection.

KEY WORDS: HIV, Saliva, Salivary proteins.
