Research study

CHEMICALLY ETCHED CAST RESTORATIONS (MARYLAND)
A 3-YEAR STUDY

A. HATJIKYRIAKOS, N. TSIGOS, N. KYRIAKIDIS

SUMMARY The aim of the present study is the following-up and evaluation of the clinical behavior of resin bonded etched cast restorations, known as Maryland type of restorations. The material used for this study consisted of 61 restorations which were bonded to the mouth and were followed up at 6-month intervals under specific criteria during the decade of 1987-1997. From the total of 61 restorations, 36 of them were followed up for 3 years at least and these made up the main final sample which has been evaluated in the present study. From the 36 restorations, the 32 successfully survived (88,9%). In the whole, 6 debonds were recorded, 3 of which were rebonded and survived until the end of the observation time. Also, there were 4 failures (11,1%) and 3 cases of caries (8,3%). The above mentioned results agree with many other similar clinical studies which have been internationally developed. So they confirm the aspect that the resin bonded cast restorations can be applied with high percentage of success in a period of 3 years on patients of all ages.

KEY WORDS: Bonding, Resin, Bridges, Fixed restorations.
