DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING
P. GRITZALIS, E. KATSONI, M. ZANNIKOU
SUMMARY The digital image processing provides multiple choices for improving the quality of diagnostic images. The tools which are used for this purpose depend on the content of the initial image and on the area of interest. The aim of this study is the presentation of digital image processing tools and the study of their application techniques in dental imaging. These techniques can be categorized in methods of point process, spatial process and frequency domain techniques. The way which they apply on the image, is described, for most filters which are used, by the dental image processing programs. The knowledge of this mechanism is essential for the user; in order to be able to understand how it operates a technique-algorithm on the data of the image, so that he will be able to select the most suitable technique or combination of techniques for the desired result.
