Case report
LATERAL PERIODONTAL CYST.
REPORT OF A CASE AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
LV. VASSILIOU
SUMMARY The lateral periodontal cyst is a relatively rare odontogenic cyst of developmental origin. It occurs on the lateral periodontal region of a vital tooth, usually mandibular canine and premolar and has specific histologic features. The purpose of this study is to report a case of a lateral periodontal cyst, in a 46 years old male. The patient was complaining of an asymptomatic gingival swelling in the vestibular region of the left mandibular canine. The radiographic examination revealed a well defined solitary teardrop-shaped radiolucency, localised between the roots of the lateral incisor and canine. The adjacent teeth had vital pulp. Surgical enucleation of the lesion was performed and the histological examination revealed that the lesion was a "lateral periodontal cyst". The review of the literature showed that different theories have been proposed to explain the pathogenesis of the lateral periodontal cyst. There is a possible relationship with the botryoid odontogenic cyst, the gingival cyst of the adults and eventually, with the grandular odontogenic cyst. In closing, the lateral periodontal cyst has a very good prognosis, but it should be carefully differentiated from other lesions with the same clinicopathologic spectrum or of an inflammatory aetiology.
