THE FIBER REINFORCED COMPOSITES
AND THEIR MODERN APPLICATIONS IN PROSTHODONTICS

A. ANTONOPOULOU, A. HATZIKYRIAKOS

SUMMARY The fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) consist of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers. Nowadays, they are composed of a light-heat polymer Bis-GMA matrix reinforced with glass or polyethylene fibers. The FRCs are biocompatible materials. Their mechanical properties are affected by the orientation and the quantity of the fibers, by the impregnation with the matrix polymer and by the adhesion of the fibers to the matrix polymer. The environment of the mouth might alter the properties of the FRC. Their aesthetic possibilities are quite satisfactory. In prosthodontics, they are used for the fabrication of full coverage and intracoronal fixed partial dentures without metal framework, for long-term provisional fixed partial dentures and for the reinforcement of denture bases. Furthermore, they can be used for immediate chairside tooth replacement, for immediate repair of denture bases and the fabrication of splints. The FRCs are very promising materials and they have many applications. On the other hand, they are not supported yet by longitudinal clinical surveys, so they should be recommended with caution.

KEY WORDS: Fiber-reinforced composites, Fixed partial dentures without metal framework.
