PERIPHERAL AMELOBLASTOMA. CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF SEVEN CASES
V. KYRIACOPOULOS, E. CHRYSOMALI, E. KARYAMBA-STYLOGIANNI, SÉ. PAPANICOLAOU
SUMMARY The peripheral ameloblastoma (PA) is a very rare odontogenic tumor, which occurs in the soft tissues, overlying the tooth-bearing areas of the mandible and the maxilla. Histologically the tumor is characterized by proliferating odontogenic epithelium in a dense collagenous stroma. Although PA demonstrates histopathologic features similar with those of the intraosseous infiltrating ameloblastoma, is a benign lesion, which does not invade the underlying bone. The PA occurs as an asymptomatic, slow-growing, sessile, firm and exophitic growth, the surface of which is usually smooth, granular or even papillary. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the clinical and histopathological features of seven cases of PA derived from the archives of the laboratory of the Department of Oral Pathology of the Dental School of the Athens University, during the period 1970-2003. The PA consisted the 3.07% of the odontogenic tumors and the 10.29% of the total of ameloblastomas. The age of the patients ranged from 52 to 81 years old, with an average of 64.3 years; the male/female ratio was 1.3:1. Five cases of PA were located at the molar region in the maxillary and two cases in the mandibular gingiva respectively. Superficial bone erosion (cupping) as a result of the tumor pressure on the underlying bone was noticed in three cases. According to histologic criteria, two cases showed histopathologic features of the follicular type, two cases of the acanthomatous, while the rest of the cases included the basal cell type (1), the granular cell type (1) and combination of the follicular and plexiform type (1).
