M. PILLI, D. PARASKEVA, C. TSIARA, E. MAKRI, GK. NIKOLOPOULOS
SUMMARY Clinical practice guidelines are tools developed to assist in clinical decision making. They are designed to enhance clinical judgement and expertise. However, the development of clinical practice guidelines in dentistry is in its infancy. The aim of the current study was to review the contribution of clinical guidelines to the quality of dental care. Guidelines can improve the quality of clinical decisions and the effective use of limited resources. They also, can reduse outlays for hospitalization, drugs prescription and other procedures. Nevertheless, implementation of clinical guidelines may be harmful and ineffective when patient‘s needs are not the top priority. The most important barrier to successful implementation of guidelines is the fear of dental practitioners that guidelines will restrict their professional autonomy. Thus, it is important to achieve the cooperation of professional dental organizations for the development and implementation of guidelines.
