SUMMARY Patients subjected to radiotherapy in the head and neck region have increased possibilities of developing secondary complications in the oral cavity region the most important of which is osteoradionecrosis of the jaw. Dental evaluation before starting radiotherapy diminishes the incidence of these complications. For this reason it is essential that a multidisciplinary team involving dental surgeons, radiation oncologist, maxillofacial and oral surgeons are involved in the assessment of these patients. It is advisable that teeth with a poor prognosis are extracted prior to radiotherapy. Extractions should be avoided during the period of radiotherapy. Post radiotherapy extractions should be carried out under antibiotic cover and with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It is generally considered that when antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen therapy are utilized post radiotherapy with extractions, they contribute to the reduction in complications. In instances when extractions are unavoidable it is preferable they are undertaken by specialists with the use of the most appropriate surgical techniques, the application of additional prophylactic measures and careful post operative monitoring.
